What is a Soul Nourishing Space and How Do You Get it?

What nourishes your soul?

A soul nourishing space looks different for everyone. This is because everyone has their own unique spirit. Something that touches someone deeply might have no effect on another person, and that’s okay. But how do we know what nourishes our soul? Well, just like life is a journey, so too is finding and nurturing what your soul loves—what your soul thrives on. So how do you do it?

FIRST, GET QUIET AND ASK QUESTIONS

Spend some time alone. Be a hermit and quiet the voices and opinions of others around you. Get into the habit of noticing, observing, and acknowledging everything. Self reflect and ask questions. What do you like? What don’t you like? What are you really good at—like crazy good at? What comes so naturally to you that it’s almost like a sixth sense and doesn’t require much thinking at all? What’s something you love to do that’s productive or helpful?

After you start answering those questions, start to ask yourself how you can encourage and support yourself in doing the things you love? What could you surround yourself with that will inspire you to do what your soul loves?

SECOND, RELEASE, RELEASE, RELEASE

Go through your home and start identifying things you simply don’t like, then get rid of them. Get rid of the things that you don’t interact with or enjoy. Get rid of the things that collect dust or sit in a storage box for years without being touched.

These things you don’t particularly care for take up precious space in your home. I like to say that space is a commodity in your home, and you should fill it with loving and careful intention. If there are things in there that don’t really fuel your soul—in fact they probably take energy away from your soul and that’s the opposite of what we’re trying to accomplish—you should remove them.

THIRD, FILL WITH DISCERNMENT AND INTENTION

Once you’ve cleared up the space in your home, and identified the things you love, let’s fill up your home with those things. If you’re not sure how to arrange everything, a good rule is to move slow. Start with your absolute favorite things—a piece of art, a statement furniture piece, or a large family tapestry. Start with that one thing and move one space at a time. Place it somewhere you find your eyes naturally go a lot. Maybe it’s the first thing you see when you walk into a room, or it’s sitting next to your favorite spot in the room you hang out most.

I find it helpful to balance out your favorite things with negative space. What I mean by that is to let the object breathe by allowing there to be some blank walls or empty floor space. Space is needed for things to breathe, and yes even objects breathe. Think of it as a spotlight effect. When you have a giant stage with one light on it, your eyes immediately go to what’s under that light don’t they? Treat the things you love by putting them under a spotlight—give them space.
